Urine ketones are usually measured as a "spot test" using a dipstick impregnated beside chemicals that react beside ketone bodies. The dipstick is dipped in the urine indication, and a color change indicates the presence of ketones.
Ketones spill into urine next to ketonemia, but use of test strips to estimate urinary ketones is no longer widely recommended because they measure solely acetoacetic acid and acetone, not β-hydroxybutyric acerbic. Thus, a false-negative result is possible even without an exogenous create (eg, vitamin C, phenazopyridine (Some Trade Names-PYRIDIUM)
, N-acetylcysteine (Some Trade Names-MUCOMYST); direct measurement of serum ketones is more accurate. Ketonuria is cause by endocrine and metabolic disorders and does not reflect renal dysfunction.
Ketostix. I'm not sure if you can buy them over the counter or not. Just check within the diabetic section of the pharmacy.
